LEGOLAND California is off I-5 exit Cannon Road E. at Legoland Dr. The 50 rides--including three roller coasters--and activities in this 128-acre gallery of structures made from multicolored plastic LEGOs are geared to the pre-teen crowd. The "animals" in Safari Trek are made of LEGOs, as are the animated replicas seen along the banks from the Coast Cruise boat. In Miniland, nearly 20 million of the tiny plastic bricks have been used to re-create 1-to-20 ratio scale animated replicas of well-known American landmarks. Other park attractions include Knights' Tournament, where track-free robotic arms give unexpected twists and turns; Fun Town Fire Academy, with a race to hose down a burning building; Dig Those Dinos, a place for visitors to dig for fossils; and Volvo Driving School, with simulators that put children in the driver's seat. Food is available.

Biplane, Air Combat & Warbird Adventures departs from McClellan-Palomar Airport, 3 mi. e. of I-5 at 2016 Palomar Airport Rd. in Carlsbad. Fun scenic tours over San Diego County beaches in historic biplanes, as well as mock air combat flights and aerobatics in World War II warplanes are offered. This is a trip in a time machine, back to the historic days of nascent aviation. Flights last 20 minutes to an hour.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are e. of I-5 at Palomar Airport Rd. and Paseo del Norte. In March and April, 40 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean become vibrant with brightly colored ranunculus flowers. The All-American Rose garden features more than 50 rose varieties, and its Walk of Fame spotlights specimens of each of the ARR winners since 1938.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is 5 mi. e. of I-5 via Palomar Airport Rd., 1 mi. s. on Melrose Rd., and then 1 block w. on Carrillo Way. The 27-acre retreat was once part of a working ranch owned by the actor most remembered as Pancho in the 1950s TV Western series "The Cisco Kid." Seeking to re-create an old California-style ranch, Carrillo designed many of the adobe buildings himself. Visitors can explore the hacienda compound and its grounds on guided and self-guiding tours; restoration of the ranch buildings is ongoing. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Museum of Making Music is at 5790 Armada Dr. Take I-5 to Palomar Airport Rd. exit and go e., then go n. on Armada. The museum celebrates more than a century of American popular music from the 1890s to the present. It features more than 500 vintage instruments, hundreds of audio and video samples and a hands-on interactive stage where visitors can play and make their own music. Allow 1 hour minimum.
